Did you know that Jupiter Communications estimates that email marketing will become a $7.5 billion business by 2003?

This is a statistic that cannot be ignored by anyone who wants to make money on the Internet.  Whether your current online campaign consists of search engine positioning, banner impressions, pop-up windows, etc... email marketing has to become a part of your advertising strategy.

In the past, the traditional direct marketing method was for a company to spend tens of thousands of dollars to have their entire sales letter printed into a magazine.  For example, if you skim through Entrepreneur magazine today, you will see plenty of full page advertisements.

These ads cost big money!

Direct marketing companies also used to spend tens of thousands of dollars sending out bulk mail to mailing addresses.  Can you imagine how much postage expesnes cost these companies that were mailing out over 50,000 letters?  And don't forget about printing costs, envelope costs, etc....

Their sales copy also had to be pretty enticing to convince someone to pop a check in the mail and order their product.  In fact, they need a really good conversion ratio just to break even.  A badly written sales letter could have spelled the end for most of these companies.  Some of these companies also had to incur high shipping costs to send out their products after the sale was completed.

But the Internet has changed a lot of this.

Now, any average Joe Blow can now literally make thousands of dollars in a matter of days by using email as the delivery method for his/her sales letter.  Email does not cost anything and you can reach thousands of targeted individuals in a matter of seconds.

There are generally two ways to send mass email on the Internet.

1) Bulk Email (aka Spam) - This is where you send your message out to thousands of people without their permission.  This is considered unethical and could result in you losing your server, email address and destroying your reputation.  Bottom line, this is a no-no.

2) Permission Marketing - This is where the reader have given you permission to send your advertisement to them.  The obvious example of permission marketing are the thousands of ezines on the Internet.  Ads in these ezines are reaching people who have asked to receive the ezine.

There are literally hundreds of ezines today that offer to send out your sales letter exclusively to their subscriber base. I have seen some ezines charge as low as $50 to send your message out to 20,000 readers.  If you wanted to use regular mail to send out 20,000 letters, it would cost you at least $10,000.

When determining what ezines to advertise in, you should always select an ezine that is geared toward the interests of your prospective customers.  Once you have figured that out, you just need to create a "million dollar email" and watch the sales flood in.

Here are some of the basic keys to a successful email sales letter.

* Have an enticing headline in the subject to make sure that
  your email gets read.

* Try to personalize your email.  If a person sees their name in
  your email, they will feel that you have put an importance to
  them.

* Write your sales letter with passion.  Remember that customers
  buy on emotion before they do on logic.

* Keep you sentences and words short.  Don't try to overwhelm
  your prospective customer with big words.  Your target group
  could consist of individuals from a variety of backgrounds.

* Make sure your sales letter is formatted properly.  Generally
  your lines should not exceed 64 characters.  If you email does
  not word wrap properly, it could mess up the look of your
  email considerably.
