Traffic: Quality Comes First

Getting thousands of visitors to your web site is the key to generating a successful Internet business. But there are many web marketers who become confused because although they are generating high traffic to their web sites, their sales conversion ratio is horrible.

There are hundreds of programs on the Internet that help you generate traffic such as banner exchanges, top 100 links, etc. There are also many web sites on the Internet that give you "traffic credits" whenever you generate traffic to their sites.

But most marketers need to realize that there are two types of traffic, qualified and unqualified. Generating the first type will make a world of difference when it comes to making that final sale.

Qualified traffic means bringing visitors to your site that have a genuine interest in what you have to offer. This could be in regards to the content on your site, the affiliate programs you promote or the products and services that you sell.

Unqualified traffic means bringing people who do not have a real interest in what you have to offer and are not very likely to purchase what you are promoting. You may be wondering how it is possible to get untargeted traffic to your web site? Easy, if people find your web site on search engines (free and fee) for the wrong keywords, they may click on your link expecting something else.

You should write your classified ads or text links in such a manner that the visitor has a good idea what to expect. Being sneaky and driving people to your site with ads that have no relation to your site will not only turn off your visitor, but will kill any chance of making that person a future customer.

Many web sites will go to extreme limits to generate any sort of traffic by stuffing their meta tags on their web pages with hundreds of unrelated keywords. I remember when Princess Diana was killed a few years ago, some web sites were using keywords such as "Princess Diana Death" and "diana dead" in their meta tags so that people searching for information about this unfortunate event would come across these sites. Of course, these sites had absolutely nothing to do with Princess Diana's death.

There are also certain limits you should not exceed to generate targeted traffic. For example, some companies were putting their competitors names in their meta tags, so when a surfer searched for the competitor, those companies using their competitor's name in their meta tags would also show up.

Although this drives targeted traffic to their web sites, it has also been a basis for lawsuits against these companies. Bottom line, not a good idea.

Search engines also frown on web sites using unrelated keywords and descriptions and will eventually remove your web site. Pay-per-click search engines are even faster in removing unrelated web pages because it would destroy their reputation as a reliable source of information.

That is why it is also very important to use very targeted keywords when you use pay-per-click search engines to promote your web site because you are paying for every visitor that comes to your site. Do you want to pay for untargeted visitors?

Although Goto.com has raised their minimum bid price to five cents a click, it has forced all of us to become smarter marketers by getting rid of the untargeted keywords and concentrate on improving the listings for targeted keywords.

Mary Joyner of Aesop.com has created a new program called Start Blaze, which helps generate traffic to your site. The idea behind it is that you use a your unique code as your start page in your browser. This means that every time you open your browser, you generate traffic credits. These traffic credits are then put towards generating traffic to your web site.

It is a great traffic-generating tool, but the serious downside is that you are generating untargeted traffic. Your web site will be opening up in browsers where surfers have not shown an interest or gone out of their way to find.

The idea is good, but it is geared more towards a hobby site rather than a serious marketing site.

But if you want targeted traffic, concentrate on advertising venues that will bring you targeted traffic. For example, ezines that are related to what you are promoting. Keywords on pay-per-click search engines that best describe what you are promoting.

In conclusion, 100 targeted visitors that generate you 10 sales is far better than 10,000 untargeted visitors that only generate you 7 sales. You will find that finding 100 targeted visitors is less time consuming than getting 10,000 untargeted visitors.
